Michigan

Michigan's capital of Detroit is the birthplace of the automotive industry and currently produces more cars and trucks than any other state in the country. Bordering 4 of the 5 Great Lakes, Michigan has excellent fishing and water sports opportunities. Home to the Henry Ford Museum, Detroit Institute of the Arts, and Detroit Zoo, Michigan offers residents a historic perspective of U.S. industry and culture. NYU Langone Dental Medicine's health center affiliates in Michigan are located in Flint, Burton and Jackson. Estimates from 2019 indicate a poverty rate of 13.3% in rural Michigan, compared to a 12.9% level in urban areas of the state. According to a 2019 ACS data report, 9.3% of the rural population has not completed high school, compared to 11.2% of urban populations. The unemployment rate in rural Michigan is at 9.6% while in urban Michigan it is at 8.6%. In 2019, 13.0% of people in Michigan had incomes below the poverty line ($25,596 for a family of four) and 11.0% of people under age 65 and below 138% of the poverty line did not have health insurance. NYU Langone Dental Medicine and its health center affiliates help to ensure equitable and affordable dental care while enhancing and honing the skills of postdoctoral dental practitioners.
